SORRY WORKS! EDITORIAL: WORKING WITH INDEPENDENT PHYSICIANS AND THEIR INSURERS A PRIORITY FOR 2009
Many healthcare, insurance, and legal organizations are setting their budgets, goals & priorities for 2009. Now is the time to make disclosure a priority for your organization, and one of the key areas to focus on is working with independent or outside physicians (or entities) and their insurers to develop an overarching disclosure program. Make this a top goal and get dialogue and a meeting going with these folks early in 2009.
One of the biggest stumbling blocks to disclosure - for example - is a community hospital with independent physicians who are covered by one or more insurers independent from the hospital's carrier. Some see this as a deal-breaker when it comes to disclosure when in reality it just means an extra bit of work....work that has a tremendous pay-off. Talk to your independent physicians, their carriers, and their attorneys and explain that your organization is moving towards disclosure and you want them to benefit too. Make them part of your committee that develops your disclosure policy and program. Involve them, now. Force the issue..in a positive way! You might be surprised when you learn the docs and their carriers want to do disclosure but were unsure if you - the hospital - were interested.
"But what if the carrier covering the independent docs says no?"
Tell them in no uncertain terms you are moving forward with your disclosure program, and when you plan to have disclosure meetings with patients & families they will be alerted and it will be to their benefit to participate. They'll get the picture quick enough, or maybe your independent docs will shop for new insurance! More on "shopping" in a future newsletter! Stay tuned.
No doubt, there will some heavy lifting, but the work is worth it.

This is the fifth trip to the Garden State (second this fall), and we are honored to have this opportunity.
